Defense Leads Way For Morgantown Baseball Over Cabell Midland

 By Ben Anderson

Morgantown athletics has the number for Cabell Midland on the diamond, whether it's softball or baseball. The No. 2 Mohigans baseball team brought the fire defense to take down No. 7 Cabell Midland Knights 2-0 Wednesday evening at the WVSSAC State Baseball Tournament Class AAAA Quarterfinals.

The Mohigans held the Knights to just five hits, and stranded five runners on base.

“Looks like we have three shortstops out on the infield.” Morgantown head coach Pat Sherald said. "I think athletically, our guys went and made some plays with Koa Silvers, Kai Higgins, and Brandon Gorby. And in the outfield, we went and got some balls in the gaps. It's a big ballpark for a high school game. So we don't typically play on big ball parts or big gaps like this and our outfielders are able to go get some balls in those situations."

Maddox Boggs was electric on the bump for Morgantown, going the distance and allowing just five and one walk, as well as striking out five.

“Maddox had three pitches on command today,” Sherald said. “I think the storyline for him is he just just kept competing for us. There was a couple chances in that game where we did make a couple plays behind him and he just put us on his back and carried us to the finish line. just we're so lucky to have him. that was one of the better high school pitch games you'll probably be able to see with Maddox's competitiveness.”

Morgantown scored the only runs of the game in the third inning with Koa Silvers hitting a two-run triple into deep center field.

Cabell Midland had numerous chances to get into the game, but the baseball gods were not in favor of the Knights, as it failed on multiple occasions with runners in scoring position.

“We left guys on base, had a big inning,” Tracy Brumfield said about the third inning. “We got thrown out of third base bang bang play. I hate to see it go that way for seniors and for our year this year. We made it this year. I thought we had a great chance today when we played in the beginning of the season. We didn't have the big hit when we needed it. They did. They got that one big hit. I think we had both had five hits each and we couldn't get that big hit when we needed it. That's the difference in the game.”

With the loss, Cabell Midland ends the season at 19-16. Morgantown advances to the Class AAAA semifinals to face the winner of Hurricane / Martinsburg on Friday.
