Fall Camp Continues for Marshall Football With The Addition of Full Pads
By Ben Anderson
Marshall Football has begun its first few days in full pads as it gets closer and closer to its season opener against the Georgia Bulldogs. Offensive Coordinator Rod Smith said that the offense after a slow start is starting to show signs of improvement.
“Well, it's been four good days some's better than others." Smith said in an interview with media members. "Yesterday was pretty rough. Today was a much better day for both sides to be honest with you. But we didn't play very well yesterday on offense, but today we came back, bounced back, proud of the effort, proud of them coming back and attacking the day and we made some steps today.”
With the season less than a month away, Smith said that fall camp is the pinnacle time for the team to adapt and limit the amount of errors before week one.
“These practices are like gold," Smith said. "So our guys have got to take each and every rep each and every moment and take it to heart. And we can't afford to turn the football over. Nobody's going to turn the football over and win, right and particularly us. So we we're stressing that the ball is the program, the football is our program. You don't put in somebody else's hands. We got to take care of it."
Defensive Coordinator Shannon Morrison said that the key to success on defense is the ability to play together as a complete unit.
“We're playing hard and playing fast," Morrison said in an interview with the media. "We got a lot of corrections to make, but the biggest thing on defense, as long as we're playing hard and playing fast together, we can overcome some mistakes. So I've been pleased with that aspect.
"Usually do punishment loafs after practice," Morrison said. "Today was our lowest total. I thought practice today was pretty good, so we did not do them today. So I made a deal with them. If we can keep it under 15 with all the reps that we're doing then. We won't do them. So they got really excited about that, which after the first day of Michael Rust off, we were about, let's just say high 40s. So we're getting it's work in progress, but we're getting better."
The Thundering Herd aims to continue to improve during fall camp in its quest to repeat as Sun Belt Conference Champions.
