Marshall Baseball falls to Ohio in midweek rivalry showdown

By Ben Anderson      In the midst of a five-game skid, Marshall baseball fell to the Ohio Bobcats 5-3 Wednesday night at Jack Cook Field, extending its losing streak to six games.       After struggling on the mound over the weekend against Coastal Carolina, the Herds’ pitching staff continued to be lackluster, walking seven Bobcats batter while also hitting two.       Blaine Albright started on the bump for the Thundering Herd, aiming to recover after allowing three runs in 2.1 innings against West Virginia. He delivered a much better performance against Ohio, recording three strikeouts, while allowing only one hit, and four walks in three innings.      The Bobcats broke through in the top of the fourth when Tyler Stack hit a sacrifice fly to score Dylan Shepherd. That run sparked the Bobcat’s offense, and in the fifth inning, left fielder Cameron Boyd launched leadoff home run 408 feet to center field with an exit v...

Early Struggles Doom Marshall Baseball Against No. 17 West Virginia

By Ben Anderson      In a game that the Marshall Thundering Herd Baseball team was ready to use for momentum heading into a crucial series against Coastal Carolina went awry on a chilly Tuesday night, as the Herd fell to No. 17 West Virginia Mountaineers 3-0 at Jack Cook Field.      The Mountaineers’ bats sprang to action early against Herd starter Blain Albright, scoring three runs across the first three innings. Senior Brock Wills drove in the first run with an RBI groundout in the opening inning, followed by run-scoring singles from sophomore Gavin Kelly and graduate student Brodie Kresser in the second and third innings.      After Albright allowed three runs on five in 2.1 innings pitched, the Thundering Herd held the Mountaineers to just two more hits and scoreless for the remainder of the contest behind the duo of Luke Proehl and Alex Caudill from the bullpen.      WVU’s pitching staff was lights out in the contest...

Marshall Baseball Welcomes In-State Rival West Virginia for Mid-Week Showdown

By Ben Anderson      Tonight, Marshall Baseball has the chance to avenge its game three loss against the Georgia Southern Eagles in a monstrous way, as it welcomes in-state rival, West Virginia Mountaineers to Jack Cook Field.       Marshall enters the contest 13-9 (5-1 SBC) after winning two of three games in Statesboro Georgia to Georgia Southern. The Herd, in game three, dropped its first SBC game of the season 18-12. West Virginia enters 16-4 (5-1 Big 12) following a home sweep against the BYU Cougars in its Big 12 home opener.        Both teams entered 2026 with high hopes following successful campaigns a year ago. The Thundering Herd qualified for the Sun Belt Conference for the first time ever and its first conference tournament since the 2019 season when it was a member of Conference-USA. The Mountaineers, set a new program record for wins going 44-16, winning the Big 12 regular season championship and advancing t...

Marshall Women’s Basketball Welcomes UMBC For Second Round of WNIT

By Ben Anderson      After ending the season in heartbreak in fourth round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Marshall women’s basketball has the chance to redeem itself and keep its postseason title dreams alive as it welcomes the UMBC Retrievers to the Cam Henderson Center tonight for the second round of the WNIT.      Marshall also has the chance to send its seniors out on a positive note at the Cam Henderson Center after the Herd fell to the Sun Belt Conference regular-season champion Georgia Southern, 78-72, in overtime. The game carried high stakes for the Herd, as a win would have given it win No. 24, — the most regular-season wins in program history, surpassing the mark set by Kim Caldwell’s 2023-24 squad.      Senior guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey said that it’s a blessing to have the opportunity to play in front of the Marshall crowd for one more time in her career.      “It’s very exciting,” Eutsey said. “We lov...

Marshall Softball Welcomes Longtime Rival Georgia Southern Eagles for Sun Belt Conference Home Opener

By Ben Anderson      After winning its first Sun Belt Conference series of the 2026 campaign on the road against the Georgia State Panthers last weekend, Marshall softball aims to continue its winning ways as it welcomes former Southern Conference rival the Georgia Southern Eagles to Dot Hicks Field this weekend for its Sun Belt Conference home opener.       The Thundering Herd has won nine of its last 10 games, including taking two of three against the Panthers, as well as a four-game sweep at Dot Hicks Field in the Marshall March Madness.      Despite winning two of three in Atlanta last weekend, the series opener did not go the Thundering Herd’s way, as it fell 2-1 on a walk-off double — the first walk-off loss for the Herd in the 2026 campaign.      Games two and three provided better results for the Thundering Herd. In game 2, Marshall picked up a 3-1 victory behind a stellar performance from sophomore pitcher M...

My Expectations for Marshall Track & Field Entering the Outdoor Season

By Ben Anderson      The old saying “time flies when you’re having fun” is true more now than ever for Marshall Track & Field as it begins the outdoor season next week, following a successful indoor season that saw a lot of growth in the team.       The Thundering Herd concluded the indoor season with the women’s team finishing 8th and the men’s team finishing 7th at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships. The factor that stood out to me the most was the teams’ ability to score in multiple events, something that Director of Track & Field Keith Roberts said is crucial for the Thundering Herd to build off of.      “It’s definitely good for the future,” Roberts said in an interview with First and Ben. “You need still need those big hitters and we still need to make sure that we’re continuing to grow. But we definitely have them. They’re in the mix. They’re in the fold. We had even the ones that scored that missed the pod...

Marshall Track & Field Concludes Indoor Season at Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships

By Ben Anderson      Marshall Track & Field concluded the indoor season at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor championships on Feb. 24 winning four medals and setting the foundation for the upcoming outdoor season.      Leading the way on day one was junior jumper Lara Check, winning gold in the women’s long jump, jumping 6.06 meters to be the only jumper in the event to jump over 6 meters. Marshall Director of Track & Field Keith Roberts said that Check had to battle through adversity and stay discipline with a sharp mentality during the event.      “She had a really good first jump,” Roberts said in an interview with First and Ben. “Then her second hump, she was behind the board. And she knew why. We knew why she was behind the board. And it was a simple fix, but there was no panic. And I could almost tell when I talked to her that the next jump was going to be the winning jump. And sure enough, it was.”      Taking...
