Marshall Baseball falls to Ohio in midweek rivalry showdown
By Ben Anderson
In the midst of a five-game skid, Marshall baseball fell to the Ohio Bobcats 5-3 Wednesday night at Jack Cook Field, extending its losing streak to six games.
After struggling on the mound over the weekend against Coastal Carolina, the Herds’ pitching staff continued to be lackluster, walking seven Bobcats batter while also hitting two.
Blaine Albright started on the bump for the Thundering Herd, aiming to recover after allowing three runs in 2.1 innings against West Virginia. He delivered a much better performance against Ohio, recording three strikeouts, while allowing only one hit, and four walks in three innings.
The Bobcats broke through in the top of the fourth when Tyler Stack hit a sacrifice fly to score Dylan Shepherd. That run sparked the Bobcat’s offense, and in the fifth inning, left fielder Cameron Boyd launched leadoff home run 408 feet to center field with an exit velocity of over 100 mph to give Ohio the 2-0 lead.
The Thundering Herd ended the frame with a line drive turned into a diving double play by third baseman Braylon Cordonnier.
Marshall first baseman AJ Havrilla put the Thundering Herd back into the contest with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game a 2-2.
Ohio regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Shepherd sent a single to left field to drive home Reese Harmon and give the Bobcats a 3-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the frame, Marshall moved a runner to second before Tyler Kamerer singled on a popup that was dropped by the catcher, allowed Mason Onate to slide home and tie the game at 3-3.
The Herd’s struggles on the bump returned in the top of the ninth. A.J. McAninch walked Taylor Harris with one out before Harris stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Shepherd. McAninch was then replaced by Charlie Krebs. Ohio’s Will Henson launched Kreb’s first pitch of the game to deep center to give the Bobcats a 5-3 lead.
Dillon Masters closed the door for any Thundering Herd comeback in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two to pick up the win in relief. Krebs took the loss for the Herd falling to 0-1 on the season.
Marshall with the loss extended its losing streak to six games and fell to 13-14 (5-4 SBC) and now shifts its focus to longtime rivalry Appalachian State for a three-game road series this weekend. The Bobcats with the victory, picked up its first win against the Herd since 2023 to improve to 6-22 on the season, and will host Kent State for a three-game showdown starting Thursday.
