Early Struggles Doom Marshall Baseball Against No. 17 West Virginia
By Ben Anderson
In a game that the Marshall Thundering Herd Baseball team was ready to use for momentum heading into a crucial series against Coastal Carolina went awry on a chilly Tuesday night, as the Herd fell to No. 17 West Virginia Mountaineers 3-0 at Jack Cook Field.
The Mountaineers’ bats sprang to action early against Herd starter Blain Albright, scoring three runs across the first three innings. Senior Brock Wills drove in the first run with an RBI groundout in the opening inning, followed by run-scoring singles from sophomore Gavin Kelly and graduate student Brodie Kresser in the second and third innings.
After Albright allowed three runs on five in 2.1 innings pitched, the Thundering Herd held the Mountaineers to just two more hits and scoreless for the remainder of the contest behind the duo of Luke Proehl and Alex Caudill from the bullpen.
WVU’s pitching staff was lights out in the contest, holding the Thundering Herd to just one hit in the contest that came from a leadoff single by Oliver Service in the bottom of the seventh.
Marshall Baseball head coach Greg Beals said that the Thundering Herd needs to be more disciplined at the plate moving forward.
“Give their pitching staff credit,” Beals said. “They pitched the ball really well; they struck out twelve times. I think we’re better than that. From an offensive standpoint, we missed fastballs, and we chased breaking balls. That’s going to lead to strikeouts.”
West Virginia’s David Hagen picked up second win of the season on the bump throwing three hitless innings with three strikeouts. Albright (1-3) took the loss for the Thundering Herd
With the victory, WVU improved to 17-4, and now sets its sites to a three-game road series against Arizona State. The Thundering Herd with the loss fell to 13-10 and welcome No. 15 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers for a three-game series starting Friday.
