Marshall Men’s Basketball Aims to Win Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Title

 By Ben Anderson

A terrific season of hoops for the Marshall Thundering Herd’s men’s basketball teams comes down to Friday night when it welcomes the Georgia Southern Eagles with a chance to claim the top seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament.

The Herd is currently in a four-way tie for first place in the league with Appalachian State, Troy, and South Alabama with a record of 19-11 (11-6). The Herd has a 2-0 advantage over App State, a 1-0 advantage over South Alabama and a loss against Troy.

Marshall earned its chance for the regular season crown on Tuesday night when it took down the Old Dominion Monarchs 97-88 at the Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall shot lights out from the field in the contest, shooting a season-best 59.7 percent from the field with four players scoring at least 18 points. Fricks led the way with 28 points on 12-for-17 shooting including 2-for-6 from behind the arc and swatting away three shots. Fricks now has three games of 20+ point scoring

The Eagles enter the contest at 15-15 (7-10) following an 82-66 loss on the road Wednesday night against the James Madison Dukes. Tyren Moore led all scorers for the Eagles of Statesboro with 20 points, four assists, and four steals.

Georgia Southern defeated the Herd in Statesboro on national television back on February 14, 101-87 for its most points in a game under head coach Charlie Henry.

In order for Marshall to pick up the number one seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament, it’s not as simple as just defeating Georgia Southern. If Marshall, App State, and Troy all win on Friday, then Marshall claims the crown. If App State falls but Marshall, and Troy tally victories, Troy wins the crown.

This highly anticipated contest will be broadcast on the Cutting-Edge Sports Radio Network on WMUL 88.1FM on your radio dial and online at marshall.edu/WMUL on stream 1. FM88 Sports’ Ben Anderson & Nate Courtney will have the call with pregame coverage at 8:30 and tip-off at 9 p.m.
