Road Trip Goes Sour for Tri-State Coal Cats
By Ben Anderson
The road struggles continued for the Tri-State Coal Cats in their latest stretch as they dropped four of six games.
Tri-State started the week being swept by the Pulaski River Turtles in a series filled with late-game miscues, and cold offense.
Game one saw Pulaski strike early as the River Turtles hit two home runs in the second inning, the first long balls allowed by the Coal Cats this season. Aiden Torrez had a solo shot, and JT Taylor had a two-run blast to put the River Turtles ahead 4-1.
The Coal Cats scratched back into the game in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. Tyler Smolinski’s RBI single scored Ryan Maggy, followed by Chandler Murray’s RBI to bring home Xavier Rivera. Jorge Gonzalez-Febo added a sacrifice fly to plate Smolinski, and Sal Mineo’s RBI single capped the rally, putting the Coal Cats ahead, 5-4.
However, the lead would quickly tumble. Pulaski scored five unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings, striking gold on relief pitcher Mason Sylvest, who allowed two hits and issued three walks in only one inning of work.
The Coal Cats scored one last run in the eighth inning, from Maggy’s solo home run. It would not be enough as the Coal Cats fell 9-6.
Pulaski outhit Tri-State 10-9, but the Coal Cat’s pitching staff allowed 10 walks, which on top on defensive miscues proved to be decisive.

The deciding inning for the River Turtles came in the third inning, starting with a two-run double by Taylor that brought home Sam Koerner and T.J. Williams. Taylor later scored on a groundout by Brayden Ricketts, giving Pulaski a lead it would maintain for the rest of the game.
The Coal Cat’s bullpen brought a solid performance with Jack Gibson, Joe Gomez, and Carlos Jazmin combining for five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five.
Tri-State’s offense got off to a fast start when Bishop Quarles led off the first inning with his first home run of the season, a solo shot that briefly put the Coal Cats ahead. The offense struck in all but three innings, highlighted by Mineo’s perfect 5-for-5 performance at the plate, including two doubles, three singles and a walk.
The Coal Cats earned their first run across thanks to a bases-loaded walk to Smolinski. Rivera added a sacrifice fly in the second, plating Recendez. In the third, Michael Rodriguez doubled to score Murray, and Jackson Golden grounded out to bring Rodriguez home, making it 4-0.
Tri-State added two more runs in the fifth on Jorge Gonzalez-Febo’s RBI single and a double play that allowed Smolinski to score. Mineo later crossed the plate on a throwing error, extending the lead to 7-0.
Tucker DeLisle and Cesar Gonzalez combined for seven strong innings on the mound, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Gonzalez surrendered Burlington’s first run in the sixth on Bromley Thornton’s RBI single, but Tri-State responded in the top of the seventh with Golden’s sacrifice fly to score Smolinski.
Burlington began a late game rally, scoring three runs in the seventh and eighth innings, to cut the deficit to 9-4 entering the bottom of the ninth.
The pressure increased as Thornton singled to score D.J. Merriweather, cutting the lead to 9-5. Then, with two outs, Burlington’s Brian Carrothers launched a three-run homer off Branson McCloud, pulling the Sock Puppets within a run.
