Marshall vs Ohio State Preview

    Marshal football will travel to the Horseshoe on Saturday for its biggest game of the season to play the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes. 

    Both teams enter the matchup after coming off their bye weeks.

    Marshall, now in its 4th season in the Sun Belt Conference, enters the matchup at 1-1 and aims to pick up the offensive struggles from the 31-14 loss against Virginia Tech after the Herd went three-and-out in half of their 14 drives and was held to only 278 yards of total offense.  

    Ohio State enters the matchup 2-0 following a 56-0 win on Sept. 7 against the Western Michigan Broncos. The Buckeyes seek their 10th consecutive win in Ohio Stadium. Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day aims to improve to 21-5 in non-conference play during his tenure. The game will be teh Buckeyes' final game before Big Ten Conference play. 

    The game will mark the third meeting between the two programs and the first since 2010. Ohio State leads the series 2-0 with all previous contests being played in Columbus. 

    The game will stamp the second time in three years that Marshall will play a top 10 ranked opponent on the road with Marshall defeating No. 8 Notre Dame 26-21 in South Bend in 2022. 

    The game will also label the 20th anniversary of the first game of the series, a 24-21 victory by Ohio State when Mike Nugent hit a 55-yard field goal as time expired.

    Marshall head football coach Charles Huff enters the contest in his fourth season with a record of 23-18. Ryan Day enters the contest in his 6th season with a record of 58-8.

    Ohio State is ranked 8th nationally in total offense per game as the Buckeyes are averaging 543.5 yards per game and ranked 1st in total defense only allowing 138 yards per game.

    Marshall enters, averaging 413.5 yards of total offense per game and allowing 295 yards per game defensively. 

    The game will be the battle of the goliaths in the receiving game with the Buckeyes being led by Emeka Egbuka who against Western Michigan because only the 13th buckeye in program history to achieve over 2,000 career receiving yards and the fifth buckeye to do it in the last 6 years. 

    Marshall’s receiving core will be led by Christian Fitzpatrick, who, through two games, has 8 catches-173 yards and 2 touchdowns. 

    The game will be broadcast nationally on FOX at noon, and the radio broadcast will be on the Thundering Herd Sports Network from Learfield on 93.7 The Dawg and ESPN 94.1 FM & AM 930 with pregame coverage at 9 AM.
