Marshall aims to get over .500 against Georgia State

 by Ben Anderson           Marshall football aims to get to over .500 Thursday as it plays the Georgia State Panthers at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in primetime Sun Belt Conference action.      The contest will mark the second straight season that the two teams will meet in a mid-week ESPN matchup and the second straight year that Marshall has played a Thursday night contest at home.        Both teams enter the contest ranked 4th and 6th in the Sun Belt Conference East Division. They need to win to boost contention in the division’s standings of determining the East division champion.       Marshall is ranked 4th place with a record of 3-3 (1-1) and comes off a 24-23 loss vs Georgia Southern where Marshall suffocated a 20-point fourth quarter lead in a game with first-place implications in the East Division standings. Marshall football suffers late collapse in Statesboro

 by Ben Anderson      Marshall football suffered a late collapse Saturday in Statesboro, Georgia, as it gave up 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to fall to the Georgia Southern Eagles 24-23.           After taking a 23-3 lead halfway through the third quarter, the Thundering Herd crumbled as their offense ran 19 plays for 12 yards, turning the ball over three times in the fourth quarter. The Herd was also punished by penalties in the fourth quarter with four penalties that shut down the little offense that the Herd had in the quarter.      “Those two things combined are a recipe for disaster. Marshall vs Western Michigan

 by Ben Anderson     Marshall football responded late Saturday, to hold off a near second-half Western Michigan comeback, 27-24.       The Thundering Herd’s 17-3 halftime lead was broken by Broncos kicker Luka Zurak’s 45-yard field goal with 12:47 remaining in the 4th quarter, right before he forced and recovered a fumble to take possession in the Thundering Herd’s territory.       Marshall defensive lineman Jabari Ishmael delivered the reaction punch to Western Michigan as he stripped quarterback Hayden Wolff of the ball.       Three plays later, Marshall scored the go-ahead touchdown to take a 27-20 lead with less than eight minutes remaining.      “It was a big drive, especially being towards the back end of the game.
